13th May 2020

Today has been a full on day.  I’ve been busy with Whatsapp meetings, Zoom meetings and loads of work to get through.  I had no time for a walk, so even though it’s later than usual for me to go out, I decide to walk to Remera again to get some nice bread.  Since the easing of lockdown, all the shops, cafes and businesses have to shut by 7, and everyone has to be home by 8.

Walking to Remera took my longer than I thought (it’s 3.5 miles away) and at around 7.45 I notice people are starting to run and cars are speeding up. A man runs past me and points at his watch and tells me to quickly get home by 20hrs.  I speed my pace and get told again 5 minutes later by another man. I eventually get back at 8.15 but had been surprised to see how well everyone sticks to the rules.  The next day I tell my landlady, and she says that if anyone is out at after 8, they round them up and take them to the Amahoro stadium where they have to stay the night in their cars, or for those on foot, out in the open.  I won’t be doing that again!
